The Young American Salon
There are salons, there are barbershops, and somewhere in between is The Young American. According to the tons of over the moon reviews on Yelp, it's the perfect in between.
I got the chance to visit, and have coffee over stories from Forrest, the shop's entertaining and candied owner, and Kayleigh, manager and overseer of all good energy in the room. Here's what you need to know...
They call themselves a Salon with Men's grooming, the kind of place where an amazing Balyage happens next to a sharp men's cut. From the outside it looks like a barber shop, when you step out you look like you've been to a salon, and while you're there, you would think you were at a friend's house.
The Young American resides in a space that was discovered on a drive around Downtown Tustin, a neighborhood near Forrest's parent's house, and was lovingly put together by Forrest and his Pops over the next few months. Being an old gallery, and covered in white dry wall, it took some work to find the bones of this beauty. Then, February 1st, 2014 The Young American opened it's doors, kind of. Forrest has great stories of holding odd hours, preserving electricity, and finding the right people to fill his space. It's crazy to think this once one man show, is now a full space selling out weeks in advance.
Speaking of people, filling The Young American is some of the most welcoming and entertaining people I've met in awhile. The energy is inviting and you feel the community right when you walk in. This place is all about community and relationships. During our hour conversation, I didn't just hear about the salon, but also got recommendations for the best tattoos, flowers, and paninis in the area. Just last week the space hosted an art opening for the artist Rachel Rogers, and her work still displays between every station. When asked how this went, they were surprised at what a big hit it was and look forward to hosting similar events in the future.
So how does one pick product for such a unique salon? It all ties back into relationships. The Young American carries Davines, which has been on the roster from the start, and was discovered by a karaoke bet between friends. After discovering the company's environmentally friendly practices and, these products consistently delivering, this was the perfect fit for Forrest's vision of who The Young American Salon would become. Later through relationships built by Daniel, a Stylest and early adopter of The Young American Vision, the salon welcomed R+Co onto their shelves. Forrest and Kayleigh both agreed to the balance this gives the salon, "Davines is simple, R+Co is glitzy, but both just work!"
Along with two of the most instagram-able brands in the game, Forrest also keeps a small selection of lesser known men's Grooming Products that he's discovered and loved. On this shelf you'll find Admiral Barber Co Pomades, along with Daugherty Hair Co Beard Oil, made by the wife of a salon owner he met while doing a hair demo in Ohio.
